A carpet fit for Jack Nicholson!
The first pattern that we saw made by our Croatian factory, a few years before we founded Regalia Floors, was at the Stanley Kubrick Exhibition at the Design Museum, London in 2019.
It’s a replica of the David Hicks’ design for a carpet in the fictional Overlock Hotel in the Kubrick masterpiece, The Shining. David Hicks was a very influential interior designer who could list the royal families of Britain and Saudi Arabia as his clients. Here it is below:
Nowadays, we’d describe this as “Retro”, but obviously back some fifty years ago, it was very of the time. Hicks designs often involved geometric shapes accentuated by bold, contrasting but complimentary colours. Theories of why Kubrick chose this particular design, with its large-scale pattern involve him moving the film characters around the set like chess pieces, as though they have no control of their own movements or destiny. Kubrick was also someone who desired symmetry and this pattern of flowing hexagons provides that path.
Various descriptions may fit. What would you describe it as? 1970’s, geometric, angular and bold spring to mind. With just three colours, orange, red and black, it’s quite a startling design, but given the scenes that it holds in the film, it takes on even more of a poignant significance.
It’s not for everyone, but if you fancy a bit of film nostalgia recreated in pure Merino sheep wool yarn for your living room get in touch!
